Challenges with Electric Car Charging Stations in Condos

Electric car charging stations in condo buildings is a hot topic in Ontario right now, with the Province trying to lift some of the roadblocks faced by owners and corporations.

We previously blogged on the recently released new regulations aimed at facilitating the installation of these charging stations in existing condo corporations. The new regulations which came into effect on May 1, 2018, provides for two distinct situations:

  • When the corporation wishes to instal a charging station;
  • When an owner is the one proposing to install a charging station.

You can read more about about each of these options, here.  We also blogged on the fact that the new regulations required some amendments to the Status Certificates.

CBC recently interviewed Rod Escayola on the challenges this new regulation will impose on condo corporations. CBC’s full article can be found here.

Considering the technical challenges and costs associated with these charging stations, whether the new regulation will have a meaningful impact and facilitate their installation remains to be seen. Only time will tell.
